In addition to prayer flags, there were prayers painted, or carved on stone.  The little ones were referred to as 'mani stones' but I don't know what you would call big ones like this.  The incantation  is "Om Mani Padme Hung" which means "Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus" and there are *millions* of these stones around.  You get a blessing by passing to the left of the prayer (we're not getting the prayer in the pic).  You also get blessing by carving a mani stone.  Sometimes the prayer is put on a wheel which you turn to get the blessing.  Sometimes the wheel it turned by water, and you get the blessing by drinking the water that turned the wheel - but don't *ever* drink the water.  Sometimes the wheel has a scroll inside where the prayer it repeated over and over.  One wheel I spun had 17,000 prayers in it.  I've never been so blessed.
